For the Love Book Giveaway and Exclusive Offer

{Details for the giveaway and exclusive offer for Esther & Friends readers from Koorong, at the bottom of post}

Six months ago I was lucky enough to be invited to be part of Jen Hatmaker’s book launch for “For the Love: Fighting for Grace in a World of Impossible Standards”.

Best-selling author Jen Hatmaker is convinced life can be lovely and fun and courageous and kind. She knows how the squeeze of this life can make us competitive and judgmental, how we can lose love for others and then for ourselves. She reveals how to:

  • Break free of guilt and shame by dismantling the unattainable Pinterest life.
  • Learn to engage our culture’s controversial issues with a grace-first approach.
  • Be liberated to love and release the burden of always being right.
  • Identify the tools you already have to develop real-life, all-in, know-my-junk-but-love-me-anyway friendships.
  • Escape our impossible standards for parenting and marriage by accepting the standard of “mostly good.”
  • Laugh your butt off.

In this raucous ride to freedom for modern women, Jen Hatmaker bares the refreshing wisdom, wry humor, no-nonsense faith, liberating insight, and fearless honesty that have made her beloved by women worldwide.

I’m just going to back up for a second and share that a few years ago I was going through a time of deep soul-weariness and church burn-out.  In times of crisis, I tend to reach out to the bible and Christian literature.  I needed clarity, truth but also humour to shine light into dark places.  Jen Hatmaker and her book “Interrupted” was what I chose.  It was perfect.  I know many Australians balk at US Christian theology and their mega-church culture.  Interrupted, is the story of Jen and her Pastor husband, Brandon choosing to step away from that and lead a church in an authentic, simple and practical way.  Their church in Austin, Texas is pared down, no frills with a huge focus on homeless outreach.  In other words, Jen walks the talk.  Interrupted is her story of that journey.  Reading it was like fresh air to my weary soul.  Also, she is hands down one of the most hilarious authors I’ve ever read.  Laughter helps when your soul is tapped out.

So, back to “For the Love”.  When I had a chance to be part of the launch team for “For the Love”, I jumped at the chance to take part.   Jen speaks at churches and conferences all over the US, has written 13 books and has an hilarious TV show about renovating her farmhouse.  She and her husband have five kids, two of whom are adopted from Ethiopia.  She’s real, she’s raw and she will make you laugh.  I had so much fun reading this book.   When I knew there were only a few chapters to go, I slowed down  as I couldn’t bear for the journey to be over.   Reading it was sporadically interrupted with me yelling out “Yes!!” with accompanying fist pump in the air.   The kids got used to it after a while and if they saw I was reading it, they kept their distance.  Here are some of my favourite quotes:

I love this following excerpt.  Jen is speaking directly to the “westernized” church culture and the prosperity gospel.  This comes from her assertion regarding theology that “if it’s not true for the poor, single Christian mother in Haiti, it isn’t true”.  {insert fist pump right about now}

On our performance and social media obsessed culture:

She a straight talker……

The search for grace, giving it, receiving it, is the theme throughout this book.  Yes, she makes some tough calls as quoted above, but it is all in the name of reminding us to look at our lives and the lives of others through the lens that God gave us……Jesus.

Just to confirm that she’s our sort of person and that you will love her I’ll leave you with this:

Live brave, sister!
